Studies and Musical Background As a child,
Doc studied piano with his mother, Ina Williams, who was a piano teacher and
accomplished pianist. Soon
thereafter, he continued his studies of piano and organ with noted instructor,
Charles Romero in New York City. He was then accepted to, and began formal
academic schooling at, The Cathedral Of St. John The Devine, New York, N.Y.,
where he also studied music theory, piano, and voice.
Additionally, Dennis studied organ and composition with Clinton Reed, Vice
President of the nationally recognized American Guild Of Organists, and
ultimately, Alec Wyton, President of the same guild. Doc later studied arranging and orchestration with Harry
Miedema of The University of Indiana. Artists performed with as Music Director, Arranger and/or Keyboardist Doc
has spent just
about all of his professional career in the capacity of Producer and/or Music
Director/Keyboardist performing with the likes of: The O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass,
Patti LaBelle, Phyllis Hyman, Gerald Levert, The Temptations, Stephanie Mills,
Jean Carne, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Hinton Battle and many more. He
was always
fortunate in having plenty of work to do. Doc
remembers as a relatively new arranger, when he would be putting the wraps on a
long record project or live show, he would often be enlisted to help groom or
prepare talents such as Me'lisa Morgan or Andrea Frierson for their performances
on television shows such as the then popular "Star Search." In most cases,
Doc's approach to starting a project all begins the same way. Determine
what the artist's objectives are, what their musical needs are, help create a
direction and then translate all this input into musical notes, chords,
phrasing, harmonies with the proper timing or staging, segues, and choreography.
This is how he begins polishing an artist for a record session or live
show for the stage. In addition to the
studio or concert stage, Dennis has served as music director/ keyboardist or music
consultant for shows and productions such as the 2009 BET Awards, the 2006 ESPY
Awards, Oprah, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel, Regis & Kelly, The Johnny
Carson Show, Arsenio Hall, Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas and many more. Some additional
credits include jingles for UPS, Turner Classic Movies, Friehofer's Cookies,
Schlitz Malt Liquor, and K-Mart.
